Iran-Backed Militias Retaliate Following U.S. Airstrikes

Immediately following the U.S. airstrike on facilities used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and its associates in Syria, these affiliates retaliated by deploying an attack drone targeting U.S. forces in western Iraq.

The drone was intercepted by American air defenses near Al Asad Air Base without causing any casualties or damage on the ground, according to U.S. officials. Simultaneously, rockets struck northern Syria but landed at a considerable distance from American troops.

Attributed by Pentagon officials to Iran-supported militias, these reciprocal actions have raised doubts about the effectiveness of the airstrikes initiated following a series of recent attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria in deterring further assaults.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized that the United States aims to avoid conflict and is committed to self-defense. The airstrikes, executed by two Air Force F-16 fighter jets, were targeted at arms and ammunition storage facilities supplying the Iran-backed militias involved in recent attacks against American interests, according to Pentagon sources. The intention was to send a firm message to Iran without escalating tensions excessively.

Despite the U.S. attempts, experts like Charles Lister from the Middle East Institute in Washington doubt that this action will deter Iranian militias. Lister suggests that this could be the initial move in a series of attempts to reinforce deterrence.

Following Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel in early October, the Biden administration has been cautious to prevent the conflict between Israel and Hamas from expanding into a broader regional clash involving Iran and its proxies in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. To underscore this stance, the Pentagon deployed additional resources to the region, including two aircraft carriers and more warplanes.

Amidst nearly daily attacks against U.S. forces over the past ten days, pressure mounted for a military response. While some, including Republican critics and air power advocates, acknowledge the importance of the retaliatory strikes, they express skepticism about their sufficiency in deterring Iran and its proxies. Senator Tom Cotton expressed concern that the U.S. response might inadvertently validate Iran’s use of proxies to target Americans, suggesting a need for more robust actions to deter future assaults.

U.S. officials draw parallels between the recent attacks and retaliatory American airstrikes in March, which led to a six-month reduction in rocket and drone assaults against U.S. forces. There’s a belief that the Iranian government may not want direct conflict with the United States, yet they might grant leeway to Shiite militias to express their discontent.

Iran’s strategic maneuvering is perceived as capitalizing on the U.S. reluctance for increased military involvement in the region. This calculated move makes deterring Iranian aggression more challenging for the United States, recognizing the dwindling popular support for extensive U.S. engagement in the Middle East.

The U.S. retaliation came on the heels of the Pentagon’s disclosure that 19 U.S. military members experienced traumatic brain injuries from rocket and drone attacks by Iran-backed militants last week. American troops in Iraq and Syria, largely engaged in counterterrorism missions against the Islamic State, faced considerable threats due to the strategic location of their bases.

Al-Tanf, transformed into a small U.S. outpost in 2016, holds significance on the Baghdad-Damascus highway, crucial for Iran-backed forces moving through the region.

The recent airstrikes in Syria aimed to damage weapons and ammunition storage facilities near al-Bukamal. Experts note that this area serves as a transit point for the Revolutionary Guards Corps and its affiliates to transfer forces, weaponry, and supplies between Iraq and eastern Syria.
