In the world of cinema, opinions are diverse and often lead to spirited debates. Naseeruddin Shah, a seasoned actor known for his candidness, recently found himself in the eye of a storm after expressing his views on the success of certain films. In particular, he called the success of “The Kashmir Files,” “The Kerala Story,” and “Gadar 2” disturbing, drawing criticism from filmmakers such as Vivek Agnihotri, Sudipto Sen, and Anil Sharma.
In a conversation with We Are Yuvaa, Naseeruddin Shah shed light on his perspective regarding contemporary cinema. He expressed his unwavering faith in the younger generation of filmmakers and their ability to carve a niche for smaller films like “Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi” and “Gulmohar” in the industry. According to him, the younger generation is notably more evolved and well-informed, contributing to the diverse cinematic landscape.
However, when it comes to recent blockbusters like SS Rajamouli's Oscar-winning “RRR” and Allu Arjun's “Pushpa,” Naseeruddin Shah admitted that he couldn't sit through them. He candidly questioned, “Apart from the thrill, I can't imagine what you get.” It's clear that these mega-entertainers didn't resonate with the veteran actor.
Nevertheless, Naseeruddin Shah did find solace in Mani Ratnam's “Ponniyin Selvan,” emphasizing that the acclaimed filmmaker possesses no hidden agenda and is a capable storyteller. This candid revelation from the veteran actor offers a glimpse into his discerning taste and willingness to voice his opinions, even if they invite controversy.
While the film industry continues to evolve, Naseeruddin Shah's perspective reminds us of the ever-present diversity of opinions that contribute to the rich tapestry of cinema.
