“Qatar is clearly one of Iran's close friends in the region,” Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a press briefing when questioned about statements by Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahmane Al -Thani on his country's efforts to defuse tensions in the region.
There have always been “very close consultations” at different levels between Iran and Qatar, the Iranian spokesman added.
Later that day, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met his Qatari counterpart, who came to Tehran leading a delegation of high-ranking Qatari officials, IRNA reported.
During the meeting, Zarif praised Qatar for successfully ending the diplomatic and economic blockade imposed for several years by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Egypt. He also expressed Iran's willingness to continue to develop bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the need for cooperation among all countries in the region to resolve outstanding issues and achieve a stable regional arrangement, adding that Iran-Qatar relations are called to play a crucial role in this regard.
The Qatari Foreign Minister, for his part, expressed Doha's desire to strengthen its bilateral relations at all levels with Iran, in particular in the economic field, hoping that regional problems would be resolved as soon as possible “within the framework of regional initiatives “.
Qatar's foreign minister also met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, to whom he delivered a written message from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
