Divorce is the ultimate decision that partners resort to when love disappears and when there is a growing rift between them.
What may be a little surprising is the fact that those who are well into their tenth decade of life are not immune to a court divorce, as evidenced by the story of Gianni Gasani, president and founder of the Italian Academy of Marriage Lawyers.
Ninety-nine-year-old Gianni and his three-year-younger wife Rosa were married in their 30s. The couple’s love lasted until he discovered Rosa’s letters in which he learned that his beloved had cheated on him.
Although the scam happened 60 years ago, Gianni could not forgive her. Namely, after more than 70 years of marriage, five children, a dozen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, he decided to file for divorce.
- There are always some cases that we have not seen before, people older than even 80 years are looking for a divorce so they can start a new life – said the lawyer.
Gianni and Rosa thus became the oldest married couple to ever file for divorce. Before them, the record was held by a couple from the UK, who divorced in 2009 after 36 years of marriage.
