    Putin supervise training of nuclear deterrent forces via video link

    Russian President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces Vladimir Putin took part in a training session of the strategic deterrent forces(SDF).

    Putin watched the exercises via video link from the Kremlin situation center. President Vladimir Putin says that, Moscow’s commitment to the position that nuclear weapons remain an extreme and exceptional measure to ensure Russia’s security. At the same time, the nuclear triad, as the Russian leader noted, reliably guarantees the country’s sovereignty and security.

    Putin stressed that Russia does not intend to “get drawn into a new arms race.”

    The Strategic Deterrent Forces (SDF) is a component of the Russian Armed Forces designed to deter aggression against Russia and its allies, as well as to defeat the aggressor in a war using various types of weapons, including nuclear weapons. The SDF consists of the Strategic Offensive Forces (SAF) and the Strategic Defensive Forces.

    The main component of the SNA is the strategic nuclear forces (SNF, nuclear triad). They include the Strategic Missile Forces, part of the Navy – the naval SNF, and part of the Aerospace Forces – the aviation SNF.

    The formation of strategic nuclear forces began in the 1950s. Their weapons now consist primarily of stationary and mobile ground-based intercontinental ballistic missile systems, strategic nuclear submarines, and strategic bombers equipped with strategic air-to-surface cruise missiles and aerial bombs.
