In the Lebanese capital, Beirut, Amos Hochstein, the US President's envoy, met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah and the one tasked by it to negotiate as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire in the open confrontation with Israel.
Hochstein began his meetings in the Lebanese capital by visiting Berri at his residence, and in the afternoon he will meet with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
He said that his visit aims to lay the foundations for ending this conflict by implementing Resolution 1701 with justice and transparency, noting that Washington wants to stop this conflict and is working with the Lebanese state and the Israeli government to achieve this.
He added that Lebanon's future and linking it to conflicts cannot be in the interest of the Lebanese.
According to UN Resolution 1701, In the same context, Mikati said that there is no alternative to Resolution 1701 and that any new understandings can be attached to it to implement it.
Axios reported, citing American and Israeli officials, that Israel presented the United States last week with a document of principles regarding its conditions for reaching a diplomatic solution to end the invasion in Lebanon.
The report added that Hochstein will discuss with Lebanese officials the possibility of a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
Walla website reported, citing American and Israeli officials, that the document of principles allows the displaced on both sides of the border to return to their homes.
The document also allows the Israeli army to ensure that Hezbollah does not rearm itself, and gives the Israeli Air Force freedom to operate in Lebanese airspace, according to the website.
According to Axios, citing two US officials and two Israeli officials, Israel has demanded IDF troops be allowed to engage in “active enforcement” to make sure Hezbollah doesn't rearm and rebuild its military infrastructure close to the border.
The website indicated – quoting an American source – that the international community may not agree to Israel's conditions included in the document of principles.
Attacks on UNIFIL
In another context, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said that it condemns the repeated Israeli attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) positions and demands that they evacuate their positions.
Earlier, UNIFIL said that an Israeli army bulldozer deliberately demolished an observation tower and a fence surrounding a UN site in Marwahin, Tyre District, southern Lebanon, on Sunday.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation quoted Israeli officials as saying that Israel is prepared for UNIFIL to be part of a political settlement in Lebanon.
