Luca Guadagnino is gearing up to explore a new take on Patrick Bateman. The filmmaker is in the final stages of negotiations to direct a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel “American Psycho” for Lionsgate. The book was previously adapted into a film directed by Mary Herron, starring Christian Bale as Bateman, with Lionsgate distributing the film in 2000.
Scott Z. Burns is writing the script for the project, which is being produced by Frenesy Films, and it is said that it will not be a remake of the first adaptation, but rather a new version of the novel. Sam Pressman of Pressman Films — whose father, Edward R. Pressman, produced the 2000 film — is executive producing the new version.
American Psycho revolves around investment banker Bateman, who leads a double life as a serial killer.
“We are thrilled to add another top-tier filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in a statement. “Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect person to create a fresh take on this powerful, classic IP.”
Guadagnino's latest film is “Challengers,” an Amazon release that hit theaters this spring, starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Fast. The director's next film, “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig, will be released on Nov. 27 by A24. Guadagnino is currently in post-production on “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
Burns recently created the series “Extrapolations” for Apple TV+, starring Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, and Daveed Diggs. Burns directed the 2019 Amazon film “The Report” and has written “The Bourne Ultimatum .”
Guadagnino is repped by CAA, Range Media Partners and Goodman Genow. Burns is repped by UTA, Range Media Partners, and Jackoway Austen.
