Apparently, the interruption is due to the death of one of the volunteers taking part in the CoronaVac study in the Latin American country.
The National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil (Anvisa) decided to suspend the trials of the Chinese vaccine against covid-19 after reported an “incident grave”. The news was notified by the regulator of the studies that were carried out to verify the effectiveness of the inoculations.
According to the local CBN media, the interruption is due to the death of one of the volunteers taking part in the CoronaVac study in the Latin American country. The deceased would be of Brazilian nationality and did not suffer from covid-19.
On the other hand, Anvisa indicated that an adverse incident can include death, possibly fatal side effects, severe disability, hospitalization, and other “events”.
The measure will be for an indefinite period until the causes of death are clarified. This type of suspension is provided for by Anvisa regulations and is part of the procedures established in the clinical studies carried out in Brazil.
Participation of 9,000 volunteers
In total, since the end of July, 9,000 professionals from the health sector have volunteered to participate in the final phase of clinical trials of the Coronavac vaccine, developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac Biotech.
At that time, the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, assured that if the vaccine works, manufacturing will begin in Brazil in early 2021. “If it is successful, as we hope to have, the vaccine will be produced at the Butantan Institute at the beginning of next year with more than 120 million doses, “he highlighted.
Weeks ago, the South American giant’s Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, announced the purchase of millions of doses of CoronaVac, which will also be produced by the Brazilian Institute Butantan.
However, the nation’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, discredited the official’s statements. “The Brazilian people will not be anyone’s guinea pig,” said the president on the networks, where he reiterated that Brazil will not buy the vaccine from China.
“For my Government, any vaccine, before being administered to the population, must be scientifically verified by the Ministry of Health and certified by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), ” Bolsonaro added.
