A reminder of vakifs in Bosnia and Herzegovina

In the long history of celebrating that day, great social, political, and social changes have been witnessed in these areas

According to the Calendar of the Islamic Community (IZ) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Day of Vakifs, which is intended to remind all vakifs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been celebrated on February 17, since 1935.

The reason for establishing that date arose from the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the existence and operation of Gazi Husrev Bey’s foundation.

    Numerous changes in these areas

In the long history of celebrating that day, great social, political, and social changes have been witnessed in these areas.

Director of the Vakuf Directorate IZ in BiH, Senaid Zajimovic, reminded that the agrarian reform of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia deleted from the vakuf records large land and forest holdings throughout BiH, reports MINA.

    – Although unfavorable, this time recorded large construction projects that the new vacancy carried with it and inexorably imposed. Many waqf buildings throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina bear the stamp of this time – stated Zajimovic.

A noble idea and a lofty goal

He reminded that “an especially destructive and unfavorable period came with the Second World War, in which various military formations destroyed the waqf property”.

But, Zajimovic added, the vakifs, guided by a noble idea and a lofty goal did not stop caring for their Community even in difficult times.

He concluded that, regardless of all adversities and difficulties, Vakif Day brought us back to our roots and remains, consistent with the reason for its creation, a monument to human humanity, kindness, and altruism.
