The list of the best movies of the year could not be complete without “Love Lies Bleeding”. It wasn’t the best year for rom-com fans. The unexpected hit was the twisted romance with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. In “Not You,” the acting duo plays Bea and Ben, two friends who can’t stand each other. Until they have to pretend to be a couple so as not to look like losers in front of their mutual friends.
The chemistry between the characters is obvious from the first scene, but that doesn’t spoil the pleasure of watching. “Not You” is as funny and moving as the best romantic comedies. The film can be watched on the Max platform.
“Girl with a Needle”
The new film by Magnus von Horn, director of “Sweat” and other festival gems, has been hailed as a revelation at this year’s Cannes. The plot of the drama was inspired by true events from the early 20th century. The titular girl with a needle is Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne), a Copenhagen factory worker.

Her emotions will have an exceptionally difficult time ahead of her. The moving animation managed to repeat the success of the first part, and also remind us once again how important it is what happens in our heads. The film is available on Disney+.
“Kule. Two sides of the coin”
Among Polish feature films, “Kulej. Dwie strony medalu” deserves special mention. The biography of the famous boxer Jerzy Kulej (Tomasz Włosok) takes us to the 1960s when he became a two-time Olympic champion – in Tokyo in 1964 and four years later in Mexico.
“Kulej” is a multi-dimensional story about triumphs, exhausting training and striving for perfection, as well as about the turbulent fate of the athlete’s marriage to his wife Helena (Michalina Olszańska). Włosok’s stellar performance evokes Tom Hardy’s portrayal in *Bronson*, though in a less psychopathic light, while Xawery Żuławski’s film stands as one of the best athlete biographies and best movies of 2024. The film can still be seen in selected cinemas.
“Monkey Man”
For action movie fans, we recommend “Monkey Man.” Dev Patel has always dreamed of playing a regular superhero. Unfortunately, Hollywood wasn’t interested in casting him in a similar role. So the actor decided to do it himself. The result of his work is “Monkey Man,” the story of a revenge-hungry Kid who impersonates a mythical warrior in order to infiltrate the gangster underworld. Patel’s directorial debut won the hearts of viewers at the Sundance Film Festival, and critics compared it to classics like “John Wick.” The film is available on Prime Video.

“Chosen”
Why should we be afraid of Donald Trump? Director Ali Abbasi seeks the answer to this question in “The Chosen One.” We meet the President of the United States (Sebastian Stan) as an aspiring real estate tycoon who is striving to achieve his goals over dead bodies. His ambitious plans are overseen by Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), a lawyer, schemer, and mentor to the future millionaire.
“The Chosen One” is also worth watching because Trump himself tried to do everything to keep the film from seeing the light of day. Let’s give him a post-election gift and let’s all watch it. The film can still be seen in selected cinemas.
“Civil War”
After the US elections, the heroes of “Civil War” is also the best movies of 2024, are also viewed differently, as they traverse the divided United States. War photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and her team (including Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” and the new “Alien”) try to get to Washington to meet with the president (Nick Offerman) for the last time.
It won’t be easy. In a country immersed in civil war, you never know who is a friend and who is a foe. However, Alex Garland does not get entangled in American politics. The Briton is much more interested in the universal horror of war, seen through the eyes of journalists looking for an objective perspective. If such a perspective exists at all. The film is available on Prime Video.
“Necessary things”
In her feature debut, Kamila Tarabura, co-creator of the Netflix series “Absolute Beginners,” follows the fates of two mature women – a successful journalist and her childhood friend (the excellent duo of Dagmara Domińczyk and Katarzyna Warnke) – who return to their hometown after many years to come to terms with a difficult past.
“Rzeczy istotne” is a surprisingly tender story about experiences that are so difficult to put into words, and one the best movies of 2024 you try this movie. The film can still be seen in selected cinemas.
“How I Became a Guinea Fowl”
We will hear more than once about Rungano Nyoni, a director from Zambia who lives in Wales. The director of the award-winning film “I Am Not a Witch” has returned with a new film that had to be on our list. In “How I Became a Guinea Fowl”, realism once again intertwines with surrealism.
This is how the creator paints a portrait of a Zambian community entangled in toxic traditions, a blind cult of family, and patriarchal oppression. Shula (Susan Chardy) learns how deep their tentacles reach when she finds her uncle’s body on the road one evening. This is how a brutal, although at times bordering on the absurd, spectacle begins. The film is not yet available in Poland.
“Seed of the Sacred Fig”
“The Seed of the Sacred Fig” will also be an equally important and difficult screening. The Iranian drama shows the realities of the lives of millions of women who try to free themselves from religious and patriarchal obsession. Mohammad Rasoulof, director of the films “There Is No Evil” and “The Good Man”, initially tells the story through the eyes of Iman, a judge issuing death sentences.
As more protests break out in Tehran and his gun disappears without a trace, the man gradually falls into paranoia. However, the real heroes of the film are his wife and daughters. The film is not yet available in Poland.

Jane Schoenbrun’s feature debut is a one-of-a-kind film. When Pink Opaque is taken off the air, Maddy disappears, and the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur.
I Saw the TV Glow combines a dreamlike story with a beautiful reflection on the transgender experience. It’s no wonder the film was immediately hailed as a new classic in the canon of queer cinema. The film is available on VOD platforms.
“Cuckoo”
For fans of disturbing productions, we also recommend “Cuckoo”. In his atmospheric and campy film, Tilman Singer once again allows himself to ride on the genre bandwagon. Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) moves to Bavaria with her father, his new partner and her daughter.
The local resort is ruled by Mr. König (the excellent Dan Stevens), who does not inspire the girl’s trust from the beginning. Her anxiety is increased by reports of a mysterious creature prowling the area, whose scream seems to have supernatural properties. The film is not yet available in Poland.
