The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced on Monday that it will reinforce its forces in the Middle East with an additional “small” military force.
The decision comes in light of the increasing tension in the region, according to a press briefing provided by the ministry.
“It is very important that we continue to work to find a diplomatic solution,” they said, despite the growing possibility of “a wider regional conflict but we are not there yet.”
The ministry added that it “continues to consult closely with Israel and other countries in the region to prevent the escalation from turning into a wider regional war.”
The US announcement came at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah on Monday, with the death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon reaching 274 today, and around five thousand people injured in less than a week due to the airstrikes, according to the caretaker Lebanese Health Minister, Firas Abiad.
He added earlier that thousands of families had been displaced from the targeted areas towards safer areas.
For its part, the Israeli army announced that it had bombed about 800 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa since Monday morning.
“We are intensifying our strikes in Lebanon and the series of operations will continue until we achieve our goals,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said.
