In September, fans of the British royal family were overjoyed to learn that Princess Catherine had completed chemotherapy, meaning she would soon be back to her official duties and attending public events. One of the first places Kate decided to visit was the English National Ballet at the London Theatre, which the princess herself announced on her social media and thanked the organizers for the wonderful performance. The Duchess of Cambridge’s choice may seem strange until you realize how many women in the royal family love ballet.
Queen Camilla
“Silver Swans” are dance classes for older ladies, organized by the Royal Academy of Dance and attended by Queen Camilla herself. She has previously mentioned that she has never done ballet professionally, but with the help of these dances, she disciplines herself well and maintains her body flexibility. And Camilla decided to take part in “Silver Swans” during the quarantine, which at one time locked many at home.
Princess Anne
In 2020, it became known that in her youth, Queen Elizabeth’s only daughter was fond of ballet. In particular, Princess Anne studied at the ISTD dance school, which competes with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), a British examination board that specializes in teaching classical ballet. It was in connection with this that the public learned about the unusual hobby of the “hardest-working princess” only after so many years: the royal’s classes with an ISTD teacher could seriously upset the British people and show her as an opponent of traditional foundations.
Princess Charlotte
Charlotte’s mother, Princess of Wales, first mentioned her passion in 2017, when the little heiress was only 2 years old: “My daughter Charlotte loves dancing, she just adores ballet and tap dancing”. Prince William confirmed his wife’s words, adding that Lottie loves running around the kitchen in “her dresses, ballet things and everything else.” one of Charlotte’s birthdays was even held at the National Ballet of Canada, where the young princess watched the ballet “Cinderella” with her friends in honor of the holiday.
Princess Diana
True fans of Lady Di know that the princess dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina all her youth. Unfortunately, Diana’s plans were destined to fail: her height simply would not have allowed her to perform all the dance moves from the ballet program. The former ballet teacher of the “queen of people’s hearts,” Anne Allan, told about her student’s hobby in a documentary: “She had dance in her soul. I realized what pure pleasure it gave her. She loved the freedom of movement and dance. I saw that it helped ease her emotional state. At that time, she was having a hard time.”
Duchess Sophie
Sophie may not have dreamed of learning ballet from professionals like Princess Diana, or been into ballet since she was two, like Charlotte, but in February 2020 she still opened new studios at the Central School of Ballet in Southwark. What’s more, these studios were named after the Duchess of Wessex. Countess Sophie’s studio in Paris Gardens has seven studios, a fully equipped studio theatre, and a wellness center, and the royal became the patron of the Central School of Ballet back in 2003.
Sienna Mapelli Mozzi
It might be a mistake to think that Princess Charlotte is the youngest member of the Windsor family who loves ballet. It is Sienna, the daughter of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and 10th in line to the royal throne. 36-year-old Beatrice, talking about combining work and parenthood, let it slip that her heiress, unwittingly imitating other women from the royal family, has a passion for this art: “I am busy with my work and running after a two-year-old baby, who keeps me on my toes. By the way, Sienna loves ballet!”
