Whether pantsuits, shirt blouses, or trench coats: Elements from the men’s wardrobe have repeatedly made it into women’s closets throughout fashion history. And have usually become real classics that we wouldn’t want to miss. For the fall/winter 2024/25 season, the fashion houses have brought one of these long-sellers back to the catwalks. The pea coat, which was originally worn by brave sailors, is now getting a new twist with exciting combination options.
Fashion trend pea coat: How to wear it in autumn 2024
The setting of the Chanel show for the current season could not have been more fitting for the looks shown. It was reminiscent of a waterfront promenade along which the models strolled – very well dressed, of course. Some of them wore maritime-inspired outfits, for example with caban jackets. The classic, also called a peacoat, actually comes from seafaring and once protected sailors against the rough weather on the high seas. In the 19th century, the jackets were made of heavy wool fabrics, and the double-breasted closure and wide lapels offered additional protection against wind and cold. In autumn 2024, however, the fashion trend will be combined very differently than back then, that’s for sure.
The fashion trend is also getting an update in terms of materials and colors. Although the typical navy is still popular, other variants are now also setting their style anchor. At Gucci, for example, a model was on display that takes the trendy color brat green into autumn. With bare legs and knee-high boots, the sailor classic looks pretty sexy. At Chanel, the pea coats shown were made of tweed and were sometimes paired with matching trousers. But a lot of knitwear was also used in the outfit combinations. After all, it is just as big a must-have as the peacoat when it gets very cold again soon.
A nice alternative to the leather jacket is the leather caban jacket, as seen on the catwalks at Bally and Prada, among others, in tones such as black, brown, or white. If you want to create clever contrasts in your styling, choose feminine details such as pumps, skirts, or playful jewelry for the sailor classic. The runway looks from luxury houses may not be heading to the high seas this autumn – but in terms of style, you are guaranteed to make big waves with the fashion trend.
