Diversity is the order of the day in fashion. Models are no longer exclusively size zero, but show that designer looks can also look elegant in healthy sizes and with curves. But diversity doesn’t just mean more diversity in terms of clothing sizes. Ethnic origin and age also represent the diversity of our society.
The latter was reflected particularly beautifully in the catwalk shows of the fall/winter 2024/25 collections, as luxury houses such as Balmain , Batsheva and Eudon Choi cast some models over 50. Not only a statement for more diversity in fashion, but also for natural beauty. The models wore nothing but subtle make-up accents and presented the new fashion trends of the season in a duet with naturally grey hair. At the same time, this sets a new hair colour “trend” that inspires people to forgo tints in fall 2024 and shows grey from its most beautiful facets. We explain why this contains an important message and how grey hair can be elegantly shown off in fall 2024.
In the spirit of natural beauty: Designers celebrate grey hair on the catwalk
Gray hair is one of the changes in the body – similar to wrinkles or pigment spots – that we supposedly have to conceal. It is deeply ingrained in our beliefs that these make us look old. Influenced by the beauty ideals of our time, this is exactly what we want to avoid at all costs. Fillers, anti-aging creams, tints, root sprays for gray hair: the cosmetics industry follows this trend and offers endless solutions to conceal natural age as best as possible.
However, designers are now making an important statement against the fear of growing old by letting best-age models walk the runway with naturally grey hair, showing that there is no need to be ashamed of the silvery lengths. On the contrary: Balmain and Co. put the natural beauty of grey hair in the absolute focus and thereby inspired people to simply leave out the tint, to relax and to celebrate the changes that the body goes through over the years.
Grey hair doesn’t have to look monotonous: How to optimize hair color at any age
Hair changes with age, just like our skin. Due to hormonal changes and slower growth, hair often looks less voluminous at the age of 50, for example, hair loss is more common and mature hair feels more brittle and dry. Shine and suppleness are therefore no longer a given and grey hairs also become noticeable. Until the pigments in the hair eventually fade and the hair turns completely grey or white. In autumn 2024, the new hair colour trend – or rather the “hair colour philosophy” – invites you not to combat these changes with tints. However, this does not have to mean that you cannot highlight the grey look in a positive way.
On the catwalk, for example, graya hair was seen in a duet with shiny, silver highlights, with soft ombré color gradients from gray to blonde or with darker low lights. These give the hair color more depth, an interesting look and bring gray hair to a high shine in autumn 2024.
Care is essential for grey hair in autumn 2024
As already mentioned, when hair turns grey, not only the colour changes, but also the quality. This makes it all the more important to take intensive care of grey hair. Regular hair masks , hair oils, scalp serums and leave-in conditioners help to moisturise the hair, keep the scalp in balance and give the lengths a silky shine. Silver shampoos are also recommended for grey hair, as the violet pigments neutralise yellowish discolouration in the hair and give it a clear, cool and silvery shine.
Grey hair is more than a hair color trend – it is a statement against unrealistic beauty ideals
The hair color trend towards gray hair invites you to be yourself – and no longer fight against aging. To accept the natural process of life and go with it instead of fighting against it. This brings a new, relaxed mindset and less frustration, because even with the best anti-aging program, wrinkles, gray hair, etc. cannot be stopped.
At the same time, with this hair color trend, we practice more self-love and accept the body as it is, rather than always wanting to change it. A beautiful philosophy that finally questions unrealistic beauty ideals. Because why do you have to look like you did when you were 20 when you are 50 and over, when you also develop personally – and over the years, not only your character, but also your body and hair.
