Selena Gomez’s best year yet: Awards, Emmy nod, and romance

Selena Gomez is, in her own words, having the best year of her life. The multi-talented artist has reached new heights in her career, winning the best actress award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for her role in Emilia Pérez and receiving her first Emmy acting nomination for her performance in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. “Acting has, and will always be my heart,” she told. “There’s so much that I want to do and that I haven’t even scratched the surface of, and it’s exciting to me.”

Selena Gomez’s role as Mabel in Only Murders in the Building has evolved significantly over the show’s three seasons. She has worked alongside industry legends like Martin Short and Steve Martin, and more recently, Meryl Streep. Reflecting on her first Emmy nomination, Gomez said, “I received flowers from [Martin Short and Steve Martin]. I’m in L.A., Marty’s always worldwide, and Steve is in New York. So, we can’t be together, but we’ll celebrate when we get back together again. It was crazy. I was just honored to be on such a show that was recognized.”

However, three (unfortunate) complications ensue – the trio is publicly implicated in Bunny’s homicide, they are now the subjects of a competing podcast, and they have to deal with a bunch of New York neighbors who all think they committed murder. The show’s premise, revolving around murders within a single building, has managed to remain fresh and engaging each season. Selena Gomez credits the writers for this success, “I’m going to give the writers full credit because they shock me. I’m a realist, so of course, in my mind, I think, ‘How many people could be at our building and this happens?’ And every time they lay out the storyline for me, they point out key arcs that each of our characters are going to go through.”

Season three introduced numerous guest stars, making it a unique experience for Selena Gomez. “The whole process was different because we had so many different facets to this season,” she explained. “We used to shoot everything in order, and that would help me a lot, but because we had so many different things that were happening, it jumped all over the place this season, and I found that a bit more worrisome., according to an interview.

One of the highlights of the season for Gomez was working with Meryl Streep. “She was so excited, and when she came on set, she told everybody that she loves the show, and I don’t even think I spoke the first day she was around, I was just admiring her,” Gomez recalled. “My favorite moment was watching Meryl sing onstage. That was chilling, and she would do it a cappella, live every time, and I cried.”

In addition to her acting accolades, Selena Gomez’s personal life has also seen a positive turn. She recently opened up about her relationship with Benny Blanco, a songwriter, TikTok chef, and producer. The couple’s relationship began unexpectedly, and Gomez revealed how she almost friendzoned Blanco initially. “It’s well known that I had a long-term, on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber. After our breakup, I was single for five years and wasn’t actively seeking a new relationship. However, my romance with Benny began unexpectedly.”

Gomez described how she initially saw Blanco as a friend and even asked him to introduce her to his friends. However, a turning point came when Benny took her to a birthday party, and she realized her feelings for him. “It just happens when you least expect it,” she reflected.

Discussing her relationship with Blanco further, Gomez shared, “He can’t lie to save his life. If he’s asked a question, he’ll answer it. But on the other hand, I want to see how the future rolls out for me and don’t want to jinx it. I feel calm around Benny, and he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.”

    Blanco, and Selena Gomez

Blanco has been a thoughtful and romantic partner, going as far as renting out a theatre on Valentine’s Day so Gomez could watch Almost Famous comfortably. He even transformed the theatre seats into a couch to make her feel extra cozy.

As Gomez enjoys her successful year both professionally and personally, her ex, Justin Bieber, is also in a good place, happily married to Hailey Bieber and expecting their first child. Meanwhile, Gomez continues to look forward to what lies ahead, both in her career and her blossoming romance with Blanco.

Selena Gomez’s journey this year, marked by significant professional achievements and a new chapter in her personal life, underscores her resilience and ability to embrace new opportunities. With season four of Only Murders in the Building promising to be the most exciting yet, fans have much to look forward to from this talented star.
