Scientists from Sechenovskiy University have embarked on an international initiative to map the human phenome, as announced during the 10th anniversary meeting of the Russian-Chinese Association of Medical Universities (RCAMU) in Guangzhou, China. Petr Glybochko, Rector of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, highlighted the university's involvement in the project.
The Institute of Personalized Oncology at Sechenovskiy University, under the Russian Ministry of Health, is actively collecting data from cancer patients for this collaborative effort. The research aims to advance diagnostic methods for cancer and various other diseases based on comprehensive genotypic and phenotypic analyses.
The “Human Phenome” project, initiated by Fudan University in 2017, explores the intricate relationships between genes, environment, and phenotypes. Sechenovskiy University's participation began in 2023, focusing initially on gathering data from cancer patients. The project's scope and ambition liken it to the landmark Human Genome Project, anticipating practical outcomes within three years.
The phenome encompasses a broad spectrum of measurable characteristics influenced by genetics, epigenetics, microbiota, diet, and environmental factors. Understanding the phenome is crucial for early disease detection, personalized medicine strategies, and advancements in preventive care and gerontology.
Sechenovskiy University's big data analysis platform is pivotal in processing the vast datasets required for this project. It aims to create digital disease profiles, enabling detailed analysis and predictive modeling for conditions like cancer and cardiovascular diseases. This approach promises tailored therapies and improved patient outcomes through precision medicine.
Established a decade ago through collaboration between Sechenovskiy University and Harbin Medical University, RCAMU has grown significantly, uniting over 100 medical universities from Russia and China. The association fosters extensive cooperation in medical education, research, and clinical practice, hosting numerous joint initiatives that benefit thousands of students and professionals annually.
